He grew up in Minneapolis as the son of an optometrist. Eyewear wasn’t just his livelihood. It was his language.

That understanding deepened when he opened Specs, a celebrated optical boutique on Hennepin Avenue. The store sat at the center of Minneapolis’s arts and cultural scene and earned national recognition for its distinctive brand curation and exceptional client experience.

Working closely with customers and craftspeople every day, David saw a gap the industry hadn’t filled. So he filled it himself. In 1991, he launched his own optical line. The designs sold into thousands of stores worldwide.

Decades later, his work has quietly shaped the aesthetic of modern eyewear. Now David and his team present the first dedicated David Spencer Eyewear collection. Every frame starts as a sketch drawn by David’s own hand. Color concepts are developed personally. Production is directed and overseen with the same care. Each frame is crafted in Japan, where precision and artistry are a way of life.
